Film night: Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö

Tonight, on the 28th of February, FinnSoc presents a film by Aki Kaurismäki, "Tulitikkutehtaan tytto".

Time : Thursday 28th February at 7pm
Place: Hughes Hall, Pfeiffer Room.

Baltic Sea Vodka Party '08 on 23rd of February!

The Cambridge University Finnish Society is taking part in the Baltic Sea Vodka Party together with other societies from the Baltic countries on Saturday the 23rd of February. The party is hosted by the Russian Society and is held at the St Paul's Community Centre on Hills Road.

Finnish Independence Day Celebration at St Edmund's College

FinnSoc warmly welcomes everyone to celebrate the 90th Independence Day of Finland and the 5th birthday of
FinnSoc
! The celebrations kick off at 6pm on Thursday the 6th of December. The venue is the tested and proven Okinaga Tower in St Edmund's College.

To get to the tower, enter through the main entrance and take the elevator to the top floor (5th). We'll post directions to the relevant doors, and there is also a receptionist downstairs who will be glad to help if you can't find us.

FinnSoc offers some Christmasy food and drinks, but feel free to bring your own nibbles and drinks too. We'll be watching the live webcast of the President's reception in Helsinki and will do some other fun stuff too (tee-hee).

FinnSoc is organising a joint autumn meeting and a film night on Thursday the 22nd of November at 8 pm.

Seminar @ Pembroke College, 7pm--9pm

This Thursday (the 18th of October) FinnSoc presents a seminar at Pembroke College from 7 pm onwards. You'll have the opportunity to meet old and new members and to hear about the forthcoming events planned for this term. Finnish specialities such as Karelian pies, buns and salmiakki are also available. After the seminar we'll move onto a nearby pub. See you on Thursday!

Once more, instructions to get there:
Go through the main gate (next to a red mail box) and walk through the first court yard. Walk through the dining hall corridor and on the next court yard choose the middle path of the three. Go through the gate in to the garden and continue to walk straight ahead. There should be an old red-brick residence building on your left. Walk about 20 metres and you will see a glass door on you left. Enter the door and you should find your self in the entrance of Junior Parlour and a bar. Walk through another set of glass doors towards toilets. Before the toilets turn right and walk through another set of glass doors in to a staircase. Climb up the stairs in to the room N7.

About FinnSoc

The Cambridge University Finnish Society (Finnsoc) is a society for Finns studying and working at the University of Cambridge, as well as for people interested of Finnish culture. The society was founded on the Finnish Independence Day, 6th December 2002. At the moment the society has approximately 20 active members with a total of 100 members on the society email-list. The annual membership fee of 5 pounds should be paid to our Treasurer Laura Berger (St. Edmund's College) by a cheque made payable to Cambridge University Finnish Society. The membership fee is payable annually at the beginning of the academic year (1st October). The working language of the society is Finnish.

The aims of the Finnish Society are:

  1. to promote and support Finnish language and culture in Cambridge
  2. to aid Finnish students in their transition to Cambridge
  3. to establish contacts between Finns and those interested in Finland
  4. to act as a source of information for Finns who are interested in studying in Cambridge
  5. to act as a representative and a contact for other organisations promoting cultural exchange between Finland and the UK
  6. to organise events and parties
